For nearly 50 years the family Calcaterra has been dedicated to pottery, crafting household items that respond to contemporary needs and tastes. In 1969 Silvio Calcaterra launched this family activity focusing primarily on accessories for bathroom and targeting to meet needs of architects and interior designers. Today, it is Antonio Calcaterra who runs the activity. Using the knowledge and skills passed on to him, Antonio has reinvented the business, creating new lines of furnishing accessories and lighting characterized by a modern and minimalist design.
Unusual ceramic from Piedmont
Although the extraction of clay – the raw material used to produce ceramics – has been active for centuries in various areas of this Italian region, there is no a kind of typical local artistic production. Here in Piedmont, for a long time ceramics, pottery and crockery were objects of handicrafts mainly targeted for everyday use, thus enabling the development of excellent manufacturing techniques, sometimes at the expense of formal refinement. Main characteristics of the ceramics produced in this area are therefore the executive precision and high quality of raw materials. It is then up to ingenuity and creativity of the individual craftsman to create unique and original design pieces, as it is in case of the family Calcaterra.
Why we like them
The strength of Antonio‘s ceramics is certainly in the ability to combine expertise in the material processing, resulting from the experience gained over the years for generations, as well as in his particular design style, a basic one but strongly distinctive. We were particularly impressed by soft and neat lines of his lamps that, brightened by “bubbles” or “clouds” of various sizes, acquire their own individuality and energy, able to create a fun and unique blend of lights and shadows.
